Survey of African Church Music
This course provides a critical examination of the evolution, theological underpinnings, and stylistic developments of Christian music within the African continent. Students will analyze the encounter between Western hymnody and indigenous musical traditions, the rise of African Independent Churches (AICs), and the contemporary explosion of African Gospel music.
Course Objectives
i. Analyze the foundational elements of indigenous African music (rhythm, melody, social function) and their role in communal worship.
ii. Critique the historical impact of missionary activity on African musical expression.
iii. Evaluate the theological concept of "Inculturation" and its application in modern liturgy.
iv. Identify distinct stylistic markers across different regions and denominations.
v. Assess the influence of technology, urbanization, and globalization on modern African Gospel music.
